A tax on mergers? Surveying the time and costs to business of multi-jurisdictional merger reviews

A study commissioned by the International Bar Association and teh American Bar Association (June 2003)

From executive summary (p 6)

'PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP1 was commissioned by the International Bar Association (IBA) and the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Antitrust Law to conduct a major survey, measuring the time and costs to business of multi-jurisdictional merger reviews.

The survey is the first of its kind to quantify the management time, duration and external costs to businesses of merger reviews in multiple jurisdictions. It provides a factual basis for discussion, both via the International Competition Network, and elsewhere, of the options available for streamlining merger review processes.'

Key finding: 'The survey confirms the existence of a relatively small, regressive tax on mergers and significant delays in the multi-jurisdictional merger review process.' (p 6)
